I give my cat lactulose, via a small syringe in my mouth, every day to prevent constipation.
Last night when he got his dose, I think it came a little too much at once and that he got the drug in the wrong throat.
He started swallowing and coughing a lot, and eventually he vomited.
Now I’m afraid this may have caused a pneumonia.
My question is how common is it for the cat to get pneumonia due to this.
Should I worry? Should I take him to the vet right now?
He’s fine today. Does not cough and breathes normally. But how long does it take before I see symptoms if this leads to lung problems?
Grateful for answers!
Hey!
I think you should just wait for him. If he’s feeling well today, I would not worry.
After swallowing you may see a change in the voice (such as hoarseness or gargling in the throat). Other symptoms include fast heart rate, respiratory rate, high fever, fatigue, muscle aches, weight loss and general malaise.
Symptoms come pretty quickly.
Wait for the cat and if he starts vomiting again or having any of the symptoms listed above go to the vet for an x-ray and examination.
