Our almost 17 year old cat has hyperthyroidism.
He’s been eating Hill’s Y / D for almost 2 months.
We will take a new test after the New Year.
The alternative to y / d is apparently cytotoxic drugs, which does not feel so good.
I’ve heard that selenium should regulate thyroid hormones.
Can you give him a selenium supplement and if so, how much should a cat weighing about 4 kg have?
Hey, Lisa!
No, unfortunately you can not give selenium supplements to treat thyroid disease in cats.
In hyperthroidism, the most common treatments are Hill’s Y / D, tablet treatment or radioiodine treatment (radiation), but thyroid surgery also occurs.
Radioiodine treatment is curative and is often considered the best option (but also more expensive). Read more about it on our blog.
